Newest Superfood: 5 Reasons to Make Microalgae a part of your Dogs Daily Diet:

25/6/25

Amidst thriving demand for high quality health-conscious products, a new Australian microalgae hold promise in both domestic and international markets, offering versatile, nutritional excellence not only for humans, but for pets too. At DAYA PET FOOD CO. we’ve been using it in all our products already. But why?

1)The Stats: The Current Rise in Health Concerns:

Did you know that less than 5% of all Western diseases are due to hereditary or genetic factors, leaving 95% of all disease, illness & death being classified as a “Chronic Disease”; attributed to diet and lifestyle alone? That’s a pretty staggering statistic. And the animal world is close behind.

US based Dr. Marty Golsteim, DVM, continues: "When I was in veterinary school in 1970, one in ten dogs would get cancer. But they were always of advanced age.

Today, one in two dogs will get cancer and at any age!

And in America, 54% of dogs and nearly one-third of cats are overweight or obese, which was simply not the norm before these animals were on commercial dog food products. We need to pay attention.”

Using Food as Medicine may be far more important than what we’ve thought.

2) What are Microalgae:

Microalgae are the newest superfoods; yet they are also “the oldest species on earth!” Professor Lindsay Brown, Adjunct Professor at Griffith University.

Microalgae are essentially the very base of the marine food chain, and coupled with bacteria form the base of all food webs. These little guys are single celled, photosynthetic microorganisms found in varying water environments from fresh to super salty, they convert sunlight into energy using green pigments: chlorophyll. And while they grow; they not only trap and use CO2 from the atmosphere as a fuel source, and:

Microalgae are also responsible for PRODUCING OVER HALF OUR WORLDS BREATHABLE OXYGEN!

And these little guys have growing applications in medicine, cosmetics, biofuels; and why we’re interested: Human & Pet Food.

3) Which One We Use & Why:

At DAYA PET FOOD CO. we have been lucky enough to collaborate with one of Australia’s newest microalgae company’s; SeaO2 Nanno, along with their top scientists; who’ve started a world class eco-farm and facility growing the very unique, ultra-nutritious, high protein algae, rich in essential fatty acids Omega-3 & 7, and vitamins & minerals; called Nannochloropsis Oceanica, all grown in the pristine area of the Byron Bay/Ballina region in NSW Australia.

“Our mission extends beyond delivering exceptional nutrition; we aim to propel Australia to the forefront of the global functional foods markets, leveraging the advantage of our clean resources here in the NSW North Coast Goldilocks zone.” States Co-Founder/CEO/Daya Engineering Manager; Gian Minns.

4) What are the Health Benefits?

The nannochloropsis microalgae is exceedingly rich in many nutritional components including:

-Being 40-50% bioavailable vegan protein,

- Superfood Phyto-molecules including Antioxidants zeaxanthin and lutein

- Vitamins and minerals including B12 & Iron

-Supplementary phytonutrients such as mixed tocopherols and beta-glucan.

-Omega-3 EPA (>15% total fatty acids >6% EPA) Omega 7

-Chlorophyl for better smell, less dogy odour & bad breath. The nanno microalgae also has a particular affinity for being able to switch off inflammation underlying most chronic diseases states: “Showing promise in combatting health concerns of all kinds from premature aging to cardiovascular disease to cancer in both humans and animals.” States Dr. Thomas-Hall, Principle Scientific Officer.

5) Why Omega-3 is so Important:

“Not many people see Omega 3 as being an essential compound. But they should.” States Professor Lindsay Brown, Adjunct Professor at Griffith University.

And not all Omega 3’s are created equal; “Recent evidence has shown that EPA alone lowers cardiovascular events by 25% in people with established cardiovascular disease, yet the combination of EPA and DHA from fish oil has minimal benefits, suggesting that EPA alone is the key Omega 3 fatty acid for cardiovascular disease and diabetes.”

Prof. Brown adds.

And get this!!! It’s not the fish that make fish oil- it’s the microalgae they eat! And that's why we use the Nanno microalgae because it's extremely high in EPA, along with the added superpowers of Omega 7 & tocopherols.

The combination of all these incredible nutrients, proteins, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, essential fats go straight into the blood, to the joints, to the coat, to the heart, skin, eyes, & to the brain & boost all of them to be more vibrant, shiny, full of health, while decreasing itch, pain, inflammation, poor behaviour and more.
